the shortness of time

+ how to improve your relationship with money

Mind Club is a newsletter that helps you thrive in the modern world.

Hey there,

It’s Valentine’s Day 💘 Whether you’re doing something special or just enjoying the day, take a moment to indulge in a little self-love.

Here’s some food for your mind this week:

“People are frugal in guarding their personal property; but as soon as it comes to squandering time they are most wasteful of the one thing in which it is right to be stingy.”

― Seneca, On the Shortness of Life

In ancient Rome, Seneca uncovered a timeless truth: busyness does not equal a life well-lived.

Time is our most valuable resource, yet we freely give it away.

We think we need more time, but as Seneca observed, the issue is that we make poor use of it.

Parkinson’s Law suggests that our tasks tend to expand to fill the available time.

Just like a large closet tends to get cluttered, our time gets filled with unnecessary things.

Imagine if we treated our time like a smaller closet. We’d be more intentional with what we choose to keep.

So, how do we make sure our time is well spent and our days are meaningful, not just busy?

  1. 🌊 Find your flow → Seek activities that put you into a flow state. When your skills align with the challenge at hand, it’s easier to focus and get into that special state of flow.

  2. 🧘🏻‍♀️ Manage internal distractions  It’s not just the external noise that pulls us away. Distraction comes from within. It’s our thoughts and emotions that make us seek comfort in activities we know as “distractions”.

  3. ☁️ Prioritize quality over quantity → Instead of trying to fill your time with as many events or tasks as possible, choose activities that bring you joy. This extends to relationships and friendships as well.

Your financial well-being is not just about the numbers in your account, your mindset matters too.

Having more money doesn’t mean you’ll have a better relationship with it.

In an interview with Colin and Samir, YouTuber Emma Chamberlain, discussed her hands-off approach to her finances.

While she trusts her family and professionals to handle her finances, there are benefits to knowing where your money goes.

Financial awareness can bring clarity, reduce anxiety, and lead to better decision-making.

Small steps can make a big difference in how you feel about money.

4 Perspective Shifts:
  1. 💪 Put your money to work → One of the best ways to generate wealth is to make your money work for you. Through the stock market, you can tap into the growth of major companies.

  2. 🔧 Rethink money’s role → Money is a main source of stress and anxiety for many. Shift your perspective and think of money as a tool that empowers and enables you.

  3. 🏃‍♀️ Watch where you’re going → Your journey is unique. Focus on your own goals and avoid comparing yourself to others on social media.

  4. 😌 Reflect on your money memories → Your earliest memories about money shape the way you think about your finances. Identify any thoughts or behaviors that might be straining your relationship with money.

Bites of Wisdom

“There is an old two-part rule that often works wonders in business, science, and elsewhere:
1. Take a simple, basic idea and
2. Take it very seriously.”

Charlie Munger

“Do not confuse things that are hard with things that are valuable.

Many things in life are hard. Just because you are giving a great effort does not mean you are working toward a great result.

Make sure that mountain is worth climbing.”
